At last the long awaited iPhone 4 has hit the market and Apple users around the globe can't wait to get their hands on this hot commodity. With a large range of brand new exciting features its no wonder that the lines have been out the door at nearly every Apple Store for this new iphone update.
Possibly the most unique and controversial feature of the iphone is video phone chat otherwise known as "Facetime". This brand new feature allows iPhone 4 users to not only talk, but to actually see the person on the line. Facetime alone has the opportunity to revolutionize the way we communicate all over the world. Imagine being away on a business trip across the world and to actually be able to see your wife and kids over the phone!
So what are the limitations of this awesome new feature? Steve Jobs has stated that this service will be open to software developers to modify and improve the Facetime application. Eventually other cell phone company's will be compatible with this software in the near future. For now though, you can only video chat with other iPhone 4 users and it must be done on WIFI hotspots as the 3g network cannot currently support this feature.
The days of having to sit on a computer to video chat are now behind us. Simply select the video option during a phone call and there you have it.
Many new features other than Facetime were made during the IOS 4 update and even older versions of the iPhone can capitalize on these improvements. Although Facetime won't be available due to the older phones physical limitations, enhanced processing and new Apple apps will greatly improve your phones capabilities.
My only grip about the effectiveness of the Facetime app is the requirement to connect via weak WIFI signals. In order to truly make Facetime a powerful application, Apple must make it available on a 3g or 4g connection. They must tap into the full potential of the application and make it usable anytime, anywhere and not so limited to just hotspots.
I personally feel that the Facetime app is the main reason to upgrade from the 3g to the iPhone 4 at this time since this is one of the greatest breakthroughs in the history of the iPhone. Apple's innovation has once again paved the way for a limitless future in the world of smart phones.
