Why People Will Continue Jailbreaking After iPhone iOS 4

Many reasons over the past couple years have motivated people to jailbreak their iPhones. One of the biggest reasons has been muti-tasking and with that now being added to the new iOS 4 lets look at some of the reasons people will still jailbreak

Customization

One of the cool things you can do with a jailbroken iPhone is modify just about everything. The clock and weather app can show live weather and actual time, you can apply custom themes to make your phone look unique and you can even change the carrier logo to just about anything. Another cool thing you can customize is the voice mail and text tones. The new iOS will let you put custom wallpapers on the springboard but that's about it for customization.

Tethering

One of the biggest reasons people will jailbreak no matter what is internet tethering. Tethering allows you to use your phone as a internet connection for your computer and only recently has been allowed on the iPhone. But the added cost combined with the fact you would have to drop your unlimited data plan to get it leave many people looking for alternatives. That's where a jailbroken device comes in handy, you can tether without a specific plan but if you get caught be prepared to lose you cell service. I have never heard of this happening but it's probably best not to start downloading movies nonstop to find out.

Cydia

This app store is only on jailbroken phones, it features all the apps Apple doesn't want you to have. Recently a developer made an app to let you wirelessly sync your iPhone to iTunes, Apple told him while he wasn't breaking any rules they were still rejecting his app. Now you can find that app on Cydia, along with apps for tethering, SSH, and many others. Most apps are free on Cydia but some will cost you.

Free Is Always Cheaper Than Not Free

One of the biggest reasons people jailbreak and will continue to jailbreak is free apps. Through a program called Installous that you can add after jailbreaking you can get almost any app for free. While many of the true developers say they only use this to "demo" apps to see if they should buy them, many people just outright steal them. When you can get a $100 GPS app for free that alone motivates many to jailbreak.

iPhone on T-Mobile

Yes with a jailbreak and unlocking tool you can run your phone on T-Mobile's network. While I don't understand why you go through all that trouble to run your phone on T-Mobile many people do it, now if you could get it to work on Verizon that would be different. This may be one of the hardest to execute things to do on an iPhone (just ask anyone with 3.1.3 software) it is something many do not just for T-Mobile but for pre-paid carriers as well.

The Downside

While you may have your phone jailbroken and packed with cool features and Cydia apps their still are many downsides. First whenever a major software update you have to have comes along you will have to install it, rejailbreak (if software is available to do so) and reload all your jailbroken apps and tweaks. Another problem that may arise is damage to your phone, while it may not be software related damage Apple and AT&T won't touch it because jailbreaking automatically voids your warranty. The other problem you may encounter is while loading some jailbroken software your phone may lock up and become bricked leaving you with a $300 paperweight.

Overall

Someone will always find a way to jailbreak and people will always find an excuse to do it. iOS 4 has already been jailbroken for a couple months with Redsn0w 0.9.5 software. While the new iOS 4 adds a lot of great features, for many jailbreakers it won't be enough, especially for iPhone 3G users who with the update will still be unable to muti-task unless they jailbreak. Now myself I'm still undecided whether I will jailbreak when I inevitably get an iPhone 4, but at least I know what I'd be getting myself into. What do you think? Is jailbreaking wrong or are you reading this right now on your jailbroken iPhone?
